Get ready for an exciting preview of the U18 Women's Worlds, where Canada takes on Czechia! But here's where it gets controversial and intriguing...
Unveiling the Pre-Tournament Schedule: A Journey to the 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship
In the heart of Nova Scotia, an epic hockey journey awaits! Hockey Canada has just dropped the pre-tournament schedule for the highly anticipated 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship, set to ignite Sydney and Membertou from January 10th to 18th.
The action kicks off with five thrilling games across four vibrant communities over three action-packed days. Get ready for Slovakia vs. Hungary in North York, Ontario, followed by Sweden vs. Switzerland in Sydney, Nova Scotia. And that's not all - Czechia will face off against the mighty United States in Dartmouth, while Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team will wrap up the pre-tournament with a bang against Finland in Halifax.
But wait, there's more! Hockey Canada, in collaboration with local partners, has some incredible community initiatives up their sleeves. They're aiming to leave a lasting legacy on women's and girls' hockey, and they're doing it with a focus on growth, sustainability, and Indigenous engagement.
"The IIHF U18 Women's World Championship is just around the corner, and we're buzzing with excitement to reveal the pre-tournament schedule and keep the buzz going until the competing teams hit the ice on January 10th," shared D'Arcy Hutcheson, Hockey Canada's director of events.
And this is the part most people miss - the off-ice action! Hockey Canada, together with Hockey Nova Scotia, is hosting a series of development activities tailored for women and girls. From coaching clinics to experiential opportunities for Indigenous coaches, they're ensuring the growth of the sport from the grassroots level.
One highlight is the Signature Esso Fun Day in Eskasoni First Nation, where new-to-hockey participants can learn the basics in a fun, no-cost environment, with special guest Victoria Bach, a National Women's Team alumna.
Indigenous engagement takes center stage with Hockey Canada's partnership with the Membertou First Nation. They're integrating Indigenous elements into every aspect of the championship, from beaded mayflowers for the players to a special flag designed by Kierra Marshall.
And get this - a one-of-a-kind Team Canada jersey, designed in collaboration with the Membertou First Nation and other talented artists, will celebrate the Mi'kmaq community, Cape Breton's nature and culture, and the classic tartan of Nova Scotia.
Hockey Canada is also reaching out to new Canadians, donating tickets to local settlement agencies to introduce them to the sport. And they're not stopping there - the championship will feature clothing and toiletries drives at Team Canada games, supporting Nadine's Comfort Closet, a program providing essentials to local students.
The 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship was awarded to Sydney and Membertou in April 2025, thanks to a successful bid involving Hockey Nova Scotia, the Province of Nova Scotia, and other key partners.
